Shall we go back to what wrought Oklahoma City? Some figure we're on our way.
Barstow confirmed what the Southern Poverty Law Center had found in its report last year: the unhinged and sometimes armed anti-government right that was thought to have vaporized after its Oklahoma apotheosis is making a comeback.
In his Times article on the Tea Party right, Barstow profiled Pam Stout, a once apolitical Idaho retiree who cast her lot with a Tea Party group allied with Beck’s 9/12 Project, the Birch Society and the Oath Keepers, a rising militia group of veterans and former law enforcement officers who champion disregarding laws they oppose. She frets that “another civil war” may be in the offing. “I don’t see us being the ones to start it,” she told Barstow, “but I would give up my life for my country.”
The question that is begged: Who the hell is she planning to fight? The majority polling for Obama in 2008? The substantial minority who didn't vote for him and don't like him but who don't see him as an illegitimate leader? And given the numbers in those two groups, who the dickens does she think will take up arms beside her?
"Reasonable" conservatives, i.e. those who know that Obama isn't a socialist/fascist/Muslim, seem to think that they can't be tarnished by the taint of the crazies.
. . . Sarah Palin, who with 17 months remaining in her single term as Alaska's governor quit the only serious office she has ever held, is obsessively discussed as a possible candidate in 2012. Why? She is not going to be president and will not be the Republican nominee unless the party wants to lose at least 44 states.
