Salon delivers a sobering look at FGM stateside.
Excerpt: FGM refers to several different traditional rite-of-passage practices in parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East that involve the cutting of female genitals -- from a ceremonial pinprick to "clitoridectomy" to removal of part or all of the external genitalia -- for non-medical reasons such as "to reduce woman's libido and help her resist 'illicit' sexual acts."
Defenders say FGM is a cultural tradition. I say so was--at one time in the United States--slavery, child labor and subjugation of women.
But Islam calls for it, they say. Really? Show me the citation. Even if you can twist a Koran passage into some perverted mandate for FGM, look hard at your Christian Bible. Technically divorce is taboo, as is women wearing pants.
A republic defends all of its citizens against the criminal. And FGM is criminal.
Besides, how big can your pee-pee be if you want a wife without a clitoris so she isn't tempted to screw the mailman?
