Wilder is an old mining town in my native Tennessee.
That region lived up to its moniker in the early 1930s, when company men gunned down the local union president. The union succumbed and Wilder soon became a near-ghost town.
Highlander Folk School caught national attention with its support of the miners.
I like to think that if I were alive in the 1930s, I would have been a Red. And I would have gone to Highlander.
Highlander drew Rosa Parks. And Pete Seeger. And Martin Luther King Jr.
Wilder hit the local spotlight last week, when a mudslide (pictured) shut the two-lane road into that region.
